Hebenton's RBI Hit Proves Game Winner As UCR Splits Doubleheader Vs Canisius

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball split a doubleheader with Canisius College on Tuesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, 5-4 and 9-4.
In game one, Alexis Pickett's double to right field started a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning for the Highlanders. Jessica Vasser drove in Pickett with her single to left field, and Nicole Carter's single scored Vasser to give UCR a 2-0 lead.
The next inning, UCR added two more runs to go up 4-0 as Taylor Thomas' single up the middle scored Kameryn Hebenton from third and Brittany Keeney from second.
Canisius returned the favor by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald hit Paige Freiberger to open the frame, and Katie Lancelotti made her pay as she blasted a 2-RBI home run. The Griffs added a third run later in the inning as they closed the lead to 4-3.
In the sixth, Lauren Hope's RBI sac fly with two outs tied the game at four for Canisius.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a runner at second base for UCR, Hebenton singled off the third baseman's glove allowing Kayla White to score the game-winning run, giving the Highlanders a 5-4 win.
McDonald earned the win for UC Riverside pitching all seven innings while striking out four and walking just one. Caroline Main took the loss for the Griffs in 6.2 innings of work.
Casey Suda got the start for UC Riverside in game two, but quickly allowed nine runs and 11 hits through the first four innings.
With the bases loaded in the first, a passed ball and an error allowed the first run to score for the Griffs. An inning later, four hits led to three runs as Canisius took a 4-0 lead.
The Highlanders got one run back in the second as Vasser's RBI single score Keeney from third.
Canisius added two more runs in the top of the third off of three Highlanders errors to go up 6-1. UCR scored a single run in the bottom of that frame as Taylor Thomas was walked with the bases loaded.
The Golden Griffins continued their hitting by sending eight batters to the plate in the fourth and scoring three additional runs to go up 9-2.
The Highlanders were able to plate two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth to trail 9-4, but had the bases loaded in the seventh and could not take advantage of the runners as a grounder ended the game.
Suda was saddled with the loss for UCR pitching four innings of work. McDonald came on in relief and and gave up just two hits in three innings. Amanda Baun earned the win for the Griffins, pitching four innings and giving up two runs.
UC Riverside travels to the Stanford Invitational for its final non-conference tournament beginning this Friday, March 25.
