Softball Comes Back From Six Run Deficit To Defeat UC Santa Barbara 11-8

Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside softball team came back from a six-run deficit to defeat UC Santa Barbara in the Big West series finale on Sunday by a score of 11-8 at the Campus Diamond.
Down 8-2 after four innings, the Highlanders (10-24, 3-6) scored nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-8 lead, and Casey Suda got out of a seventh-inning jam to seal the victory for UC Riverside.
The Highlanders began the day taking a 2-0 lead after the second inning. Brittany Keeney led off the frame with a single, and advanced to third after Kayla White reached on an error. Jessica Vasser's sac fly allowed Keeney to score for UCR's first run, and a batter later, Coco Villamor doubled to center field scoring White.
The Gauchos (22-19, 6-3) halved the lead in the bottom of their respective frame, as a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Kendall Gill made it 2-1.
In the third inning, UCSB's bats came alive as they touched UCR starter Jordyn McDonald for five runs to go up 6-2. Casey Suda came on in relief and got the last out of the inning, but gave up two more runs in the fourth as UC Santa Barbara opened up an 8-2 lead.
That lead was shortlived, as UC Riverside responded with a five-spot of its own in the top of the fifth inning.
Alexis Pickett led off the frame with a solo home run over the centerfield fence. Dionne Anderson then tripled to left field, and Ariel Shore singled to the shortstop bringing Anderson home.
Brooke Hebenton was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base, and with two outs, White hit a 3-RBI home run to centerfield that closed the Gauchos lead to 8-7.
In the next inning, the Highlanders continued their hot hitting by scoring four runs to take an 11-8 lead.
Shore led off the inning with a single, and was sac bunted to second by B. Hebenton. Kameryn Hebenton then drew a walk, and Keeney laced a single into centerfield. Shore rounded third and was able to score thanks to an error by the Gauchos centerfielder.
With two outs, Vasser was walked to load the bases. Villamor then reached on a fielding error by the UCSB second baseman, which allowed K. Hebenton to come home, giving UCR a 9-8 lead.
Pickett put the Highlanders on top with a single, scoring both Vasser and Keeney as UC Riverside went up 11-8.
Suda retired the UC Santa Barbara batters in order in the sixth, and got out of a jam in the seventh as UCR completed its come from behind victory.
Four different Highlanders recorded two hits apiece, while White and Pickett led the team with three RBI each.
UC Riverside continues its roadswing with a three-game series at Pacific beginning on Friday, April 22 in Stockton, CA.
