Box Score - Cal Poly 7, UC Riverside 1
Box Score - UC Riverside 4, Cal Poly 3
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split a doubleheader against Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon to open league play. The Highlanders (8-17, 1-1) lost 7-1 in the first game, but came back to win 4-3 in game two at Amy S. Harrison Field.
In the first game, Cal Poly (5-23, 1-1) scored a single run in the opening frame, and back to back solo blasts by Anna Cahn and Stephanie Correia put the Mustangs up 3-0 in the top of the third. A fourth run was scored by a sac fly, lifting CP to an early 4-0 lead.
In the next inning, Correia hit another home run, this time with two runners on base to give Cal Poly a 7-0 advantage.
UCR's Jessica Vasser led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, and came around to score on Coco Villamor's double. That was the only scoring the Highlanders would do that game, however, as Cal Poly held on for the 7-1 win.
Jordyn McDonald took the loss for UCR, while Rebecca Patton earned the win for the Mustangs.
Similar to game one, Cal Poly opened game two by scoring first, this time with two runs. The Highlanders halved the score in the bottom of the first, as Brittany Keeney's single scored Kayla White from third.
UC Riverside then took a 3-2 lead after scoring two runs in the second inning on Villamor and White's consecutive RBI singles. The Highlanders added a fourth run in the third off of Brooke Hebenton's RBI sac fly that scored Keeney from third.
That fourth run would prove to be the game winner as the Mustangs got another run across in the top of the fourth on Cahn's home run.
Neither team scored after that inning however, and UCR pitcher Casey Suda retired the Mustangs batters in order in the seventh to seal the win.
Suda picked up her first win on the season, pitching all seven innings for the Highlanders while walking none. Cahn was saddled with the loss for Cal Poly, giving up all four earned runs in three innings of work.
For the game, White went 3-for-4 with a RBI while four other players recorded a hit apiece.
The Highlanders conclude the three-game series with the Mustangs on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
