Box Score - Cal Poly 5, UC Riverside 4
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team had a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning, but could not stop a three-run frame as Cal Poly came from behind to win the three-game series finale 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Mustangs (6-23, 2-1) won game one of the Big West opener 7-1 on Saturday, but the Highlanders (8-18, 1-2) rebounded in game two with a 4-3 victory.
It looked as if UCR would take the opening series as they led by two runs after the sixth inning, but with one out and bases loaded, the Mustangs came home on two walks and a hit batter to lead 5-4.
UC Riverside had one last chance to change momentum, but went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the game.
Casey Suda was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, pitching 6.1 innings but allowing all five runs to score, only three of which were earned. Rebecca Patton got the win for the Mustangs, pitching all seven innings.
The Highlanders were retired in order in each of the first three innings, but Ariel Shore's triple with one out in the fourth inning ended Patton's perfect game bid.
With two outs, Brittany Keeney bunted and reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing Shore to score safely to give UCR a 1-0 lead.
Taylor Thomas then laced a single up the middle. Cal Poly's centerfielder overthrew the ball, allowing Thomas to reach third and Keeney to score to lift the Highlanders to a 2-0 lead.
Their lead was shortlived, however, as the Mustangs responded in the top of the next frame with two runs to tie the game. With one out, Cal Poly hit consecutive singles to put runners at first and second. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance one base, and Nicole Lund's single plated both runs to even out the contest.
Shore started things off for the Highlanders in the sixth, as she reached on an error by the Mustangs first baseman. Kameryn Hebenton sacrificed Shore to second, and Keeney's subsequent RBI single made it a 3-2 game.
Thomas sacrificed Keeney over to second, and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jessica Vasser then singled in the infield, allowing Keeney to score giving UCR a 4-2 lead.
The Highlanders had two runners in scoring position after Brooke Hebenton's single and were looking to tack on more runs, but pinch hitter Jojo Mendoza popped up to end the sixth inning.
UC Riverside now travels to CSU Bakersfield for a make-up doubleheader with the Runners on Wednesday, April 6 at 1 pm in Bakersfield, CA.
