The UC Riverside Athletics Department hosted its 2010-11 Highlanders Awards Celebration on Sunday evening at Hub 302 on UCR's campus, honoring the achievements of the 2010-11 Highlanders student-athletes.
This year, the UC Riverside Athletics Department handed out 11 awards to distinguished student-athletes for their accomplishments during the 2010-11 season.
The first award was presented to softball sophomore Ariel Shore as the recipient of the Golden Ankle Wrap.
Shore went above and beyond the expectations of her peers, coaches, and the sports medicince staff during the rehabilitation of her injury, becomming the first-ever recipient of UCR's Golden Ankle Wrap for outstanding dedication to recovering.
Shore has many characteristics that make her an exceptional student-athlete. While she suffered an injury that kept her out of competition for at least half a year, Shore was able to maintain a positive attitude each and every day.
Her optimism and desire to be challenged through her lengthy rehab program was very admirable. Moreover, Shore's positive energy and motivation was contagious, as she continuously encouraged her fellow student-athletes within the sports medicine clinic.
The second award was the Iron Highlander Award, given to a male and female student-athlete for their dedication in the weight room. Men's Tennis player Kevin Griffin won the award on the men's side, while Women's Soccer player Shelley Brumbaugh was the recipient on the women's side.
Kevin is a transfer student and from day one has shown the desire to be a better tennis player. He consistently came in to see Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Gary Heron and ask for extra information on nutrition and workouts so that he can improve his tennis game every day.
He takes every workout seriously and does not skip reps because he knows that by doing so he loses the ability to get better and improve.
Shelley is a freshman and from the beginning has shown the enthusiasm and work ethic necessary to be a true competitor. While her team did not have a good season, she has shown that she wants to get better and wants her teammates to get better.
She never misses reps in a workout and even when she finishes ahead of her teammates, she encourages and cheers them on so that they can get better themselves.
UCR's Ariel Shore won her second award of the evening, as she was the recipient of the Hueston M. & Margaret W. Harper Award Scholarship, presented annually to the UCR varsity athlete—a freshman, sophomore or junior—whose athletic and scholarly achievements are deemed most outstanding. The recipient must have a GPA of at least 3.20.
As a freshman last season, Shore led the softball team in runs scored, stolen bases, and steal attempts while finishing first in the Big West Conference in stolen bases. She set the UC Riverside Division I single-season record for most stolen bases with 24.
This season, she finished third on the squad in stolen bases and was fourth in hits and runs scored.
Junior track and field athlete Kevin Fashola was the winner of the evening's next award, the Lindy-Citizenship Award, given annually to the student-athlete who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the university and the community at large during the current school year.
Although Kevin's 2011 outdoor season was cut short due to injury, he never let that impact his desire to assist others in the community, particulary his fellow students.
Program and Community Service Coordinators at The Well have described Kevin's work as being instrumental in the success of the Golden Arches Peer Health Education Program as he has voluteered countless hours attending membership meetings and program planning sessions.
With a primary focus on alcohol and other drug issues, the program also addresses the topic of sexual health, sexual assault/violence, nutrition/fitness, eating disorders/body image, gambling, stress and other issues facing today's college students.
Outside of his campus activities, Kevin volunteers with Loma Linda Hospital's Child Life Department, and this summer he is scheduled to work as a reseach assistant at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development.
Baseball's Matt Andriese won the SAAC Sports Moment of the Year Award for his one-hit performance in a 2-0 win over CSU Bakersfield on April 22. Unfortunately gohighlanders.com did not have video footage of the event, but you can watch the reenactment.
Other nominees for the Sports Moment of the Year were Andriese's teammate, Bryan Horst, for his game-winning hit vs. 16th-ranked UCLA (watch); Kevin Bradshaw's game-winning dunk at Cal State Fullerton (watch); and Allison Wilder's triple jump performance during the indoor track and field season that earned her a 2011 All-America award (watch).
Softball player Dawn Brodersen and Men's Soccer athlete Normando Mariscal were the recipients of UCR's Best Teammate Award presented annually to the UCR student and varsity athlete whose actions both on and off the field exemplify the concepts and ideals of team and teamwork.
Brodersen is a four-year member of the UCR softball team who has been a spot starter and role player for most of her career. Despite her lack of regular playing time, nobody on the team has been more enthusiastic or more supportive of her coaching staff and teammates than Brodersen.
The first person to arrive at practice and the last one to leave, she consistently made herself available to her teammates to work on all aspects of their games.
Brodersen's’s interest in her teammates doesn’t end when they cross over the white lines, however. Whether it is a ride to practice, assistance with a class, or lending an ear to a newcomer to the team who needs help adjusting to life at a major university, Brodersen has always put team ahead of self.
Mariscal transferred to UC Riverside two years ago from Cerritos College, but in that short time he established himself as one of the leaders of the UCR Men’s Soccer program.
Not only did Norm have to acclimate to a new university setting upon transferring, but this season, the coaching staff also asked him to change positions on the field - a challenge which he embraced and welcomed as an opportunity to grow and develop as a player, and understood to be in the best interest of the team.
Although he had an injury-plagued senior season, Mariscal's support for his UCR brethren never wavered. Nor did it prevent him from working diligently with the sports medicine staff to return to the field, and that hard work paid off as he was able to start his final game as a collegian on Senior Day, 2011.
UCR Softball junior Brittany Keeney was the recipient of the next award of the evening, the Braveheart Award. This award is given to a student-athlete, coach, or staff member who, when confronted with a life-altering situation, demonstrated integrity, courage or strength of character, and in doing so, serves as a role model to give hope and inspire others in similar situations.
On Monday, July 12, 2010, Keeney was traveling back from Bakersfield on the 5 freeway just before magic mountain. Traffic came to a stop as it often does, and when it began to move again, her car died on the spot in the middle of a major highway - the engine wouldn’t start, the emergency blinkers wouldn’t work.
As traffic reached normal traveling speed around her, a truck ran into the back of her car causing the gas tank to explode.
Thankfully, somebody was looking out for her that day, as she was able to exit the car in one piece, albeit with numerous bruises and cuts and second and third degree burns on her face.
Taken to the USC Burn Center, her doctors did not think she would be able to return to the lineup by the time her spring season rolled around with all the rehabilitation that awaited her.
Apparently her doctor’s didn’t know her very well.
On February 11, 2011, UC Riverside Softball Coach Connie Miner wrote Keeny’s name into the lineup against Washington State as the team’s third baseman batting her third in the order.
On any other day, it was a game the team would rather forget as they ended up on the wrong end of a lopsided score. But it is a game that all associated with will always remember as Brittany not only played in the game, but she went two for three at the plate and handled all three of her chances cleanly at third.
She would go on to earn Second Team All-Conference honors in 2011.
The Male Student-Athlete of the Year award went to Highlanders baseball player Trevor Hairgrove, while the winner of the Female Student-Athlete of the Year was women's track & field athlete Allison Wilder.
A four-year starter at shortop for the Highlanders, Hairgrove saved his best season for last. He leads the squad with a .337 batting average while ranking second in on base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, doubles and RBIs.
Entering the weekend, Hairgrove ranked 10th in the conference in batting average, fifth in base hits, fourth in doubles and eighth in total bases. In the field, the Highland, CA native leads the entire conference in assists with 152, and has turned the fifth most double plays.
Midway through the year, Hairgrove was named Big West Conference player of the week, College Baseball Insider West Region Player of the Week and College Baseball 360 Primetime Performer.
Although conference awards will not be doled out in baseball yet for another week, Hairgrove will no doubt be adding to his collection of hardware when that announcement is made.
Wilder was named the UCR Female Student-Athlete of the Year after garnering the distinction of being an All-American.
Already UC Riverside’s record holder in the indoor triple jump, Wilder added the outdoor version to her resume earlier this year with a leap of 43 feet, 2.5 inches. She easily won the Big West Conference Championship this season besting her closest competitor by nearly a foot and a half.
West regionals are this coming weekend in Eugene, Oregon where Wilder will take the first step, or rather the first three steps, towards adding an outdoor All-America honor to her impressive list of credentials.
The Highlanders softball team won the inaugural Scotty Cup. The Scotty Cup was an inter squad competition implemented this year that encouraged positive competition through the support of other UC Riverside teams.
The goal was to get as many different student athletes out to games and events with the incentive of winning the grand prize.
Throughout the evening, the Highlanders also celebrated their Big West All-Conference award winners, Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members, graduating seniors, and Big West Scholar Athletes.
