Northridge, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (11-31, 4-13) lost a Big West Conference doubleheader at Cal State Northridge on Saturday 10-5 and 7-1 at the Matador Diamond.
CSUN (20-29, 8-9) got things going in the first inning of game one as the first batter of the inning, Jaci Carlsen, took a Jordyn McDonald offering and sent it soaring over the left field fence. The Madadors took a 2-0 lead later that inning as with two outs, Madeline Sale doubled to left field scoring Tracy Allen who had reached on a fielder's choice.
UCR's Brittany Keeney cut the lead in half in the second inning as she lifted a pitch over the right field fence making it 2-1.
McDonald settled down after that allowing just two Matadors hits over the next three innings.
The Highlanders offense scored two runs in the third to go up 3-2 on Kayla White's two-RBI home run.
UC Riverside continued its scoring by tacking on two more runs in the fifth inning. White doubled to lead off the frame, and came home on Ariel Shore's single.
After a pitching change, Shore stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Keeney's sac fly to left field was enough to send Shore home, as UCR took a 5-2 advantage.
Cal State Northridge closed the gap to one, 5-4, after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly and a single. The Matadors then opened up the game touching McDonald for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, going up 10-5.
The Highlanders had runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh, but they could not recover as a strike out ended the game.
McDonald suffered the loss for UCR, giving up nine hits and nine earned runs while striking out four in 6.0 innings of work. Carly Wade earned the win for CSUN, allowing no runs and one hit in three innings.
In game two, the Highlanders had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning, but could not convert them into runs as two consecutive strike outs ended the threat.
The Highlanders were able to get on board an inning later, though, taking a 1-0 lead on Kameryn Hebenton's single that plated White from third.
UCR's lead was shortlived, however, as Cal State Northridge responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Matadors added a single run in the fourth, and two insurance runs in the fifth to win 7-1.
Wade earned her second win of the day for CSUN, allowing one earned run in six innings. Casey Suda took the loss for UC Riverside, giving up 13 hits and three earned runs.
The Highlanders conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, May 8 at 12:00 pm in Northridge, CA.
