Juan Mendoza's Three Assists Help Men's Soccer Bounce Back With 4-1 Win Over UC Irvine
10/17/2012 5:38:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—Jimmy Martinez scored a pair of goals Wednesday evening while Jose Diaz and Aaron Long each added a single score as the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team ended a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 victory over UC Irvine (Box Score/Video Highlights).
The Highlanders dropped three straight conference matches heading into the week and five of six overall since winning their first seven matches of the year. They also scored one goal or less in six of their last seven matches.
But Long got UCR on the board early thanks to assists from Juan Mendoza and Martinez in the 11th minute of play.
That score held up heading into the break, but the Highlanders got a scare with just under 18 minutes gone in the second as goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi collided with an Anteaters attacker and had to leave the match.
Colt Reichl took over between the pipes for UCR, and just over seven minutes later, the Highlanders doubled their lead following a foul in the UCR box. Diaz converted on the subsequent penalty kick to put the Highlanders up 2-0.
It took just a minute and 20 seconds for UC Riverside to score its third goal of the night as Mendoza and Otis Earle combined on a series of passes that found Martinez open for his first score of the evening.
A defensive lapse allowed UC Irvine's Pavle Atanackovic to end the shutout with 18:14 left on the clock, but Martinez got the goal back in the 76th minute with his second goal of the night.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend as they host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, October 20. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm PT.
GAME NOTES
The four goals were the most the Highlanders have scored since a 5-0 win over North Florida on September 14, and the most they have scored in a Big West Conference match since November 4, 2005 when UCR topped Cal Poly by a 5-0 score.
Juan Mendoza had three assists on the night, which ties the UC Riverside record held by three other players.
Jimmy Martinez's five points on the day tie the school record held by five other players.
