Riverside—Damajeria DuBose finished fourth and Raquel Hefflin came in ninth place Saturday morning to lead the UC Riverside Women's Cross Country Team to a fourth place finish at the Big West Championships. Cal Poly took its first team title since 2001 thanks to a record-setting performance by freshman Laura Hollander. Her time of 19:12.6 was more than a half minute ahead of second place finisher Sarah Sumpter, and broke the course record of 19:57.0 set by UC Santa Barbara's Amanda Moreno on October 30, 2010.
Sumpter's time of 19:44.4 also broke the course record, and helped UC Davis to a second-place overall finish. The Aggies placed two additional runners in the top five as Alycia Cridbring finished third and Katie Fry took fifth.
The Mustangs' Savannah Pio and Vanessa Hancock finished seventh and eighth respectively, but the difference between first and second place came in the fourth and fifth runners as Cal Poly's Meghan Breadmore came in 11th, and Alex Ciaraglia finished 16th compared to UC Davis's Christine Hoffman and Lauren Wallace who took 17th and 19th respectively.
DuBose's time of 20:16.0 was just eight-tenths of a second off of the UC Riverside course record of 20:15.2 established by Cristina Olivas at the 2008 conference championship. Hefflin's time of 20:34.3 was the fifth fastest in Highlanders course history just off of Dubose's time of 20:33.4 on September 15 of this year.
Jzsanette Lindstrom was the third finisher for UCR, coming in 15th place with a time of 21:01.5. Katy Daly and Alisha Brown finished back-to-back in 26th and 27th places respectively, while Brianna Simmons was 31st, Jaasmin Pina came in 51st, and Maryann Holliday brought up the rear in 64th.
UC Riverside now prepares for the NCAA West Regional Championship on November 10 in Seattle, WA.
