UC Riverside Track & Field Splits Dual Meet With UC Santa Barbara

Riverside—UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara christened the new UC Riverside Track Facility Saturday afternoon, and those in attendance couldn't have asked for a better grand opening. Both the men's and women's meets came down to the final events as the Highlanders women's squad edged the Gauchos 92 to 86, and UCSB topped UCR 93 to 87 on the men's side. (Complete Results)
The field events got underway at noon, and Ashley Gatewood was the first member of the UC Riverside women's team to dent the scoreboard as she won the javelin with a distance of 160' 3". Ted Hooper got the men's team going early with a career-best, and event-winning long jump of 23' 10".
That was the first of four Highlanders wins in the jumps as Danielle Littleton won the women's long jump (18' 7.00"), Jazmine Lewis took the women's triple jump (37' 4.50), and Ryan Swafford won the men's triple jump (51' 9.00").
UCR also dominated the throws as Travis Smith won the men's shot put (56' 6.75") and the discus (167' 8"), while Caleb Stuart won the men's hammer (195' 7") and Nikki James took the women's hammer (179' 0") and discus (159' 0").
In the sprints, the Highlanders picked up victories in the men's 4x100 (Justin Harris, Hernell Dyer, Michael Hern, Bryan Adams), women's 400m (Yozmine Modeste), men's 100m (Dyer), women's 100m (Alisha Brown), men's 400m (Sean Ferrera) and men's 200m (Bryan Adams).
The middle distances saw UCR take the women's 1,500m (Raquel Hefflin), women's 800m (Brown) and men's 3,000m (Chad Hall).
The Highlanders also won the men's (Ferrera) and women's (Adriana Paz) 400m hurdles, and the women's 4x400m relay (Brown, Paz, Michelle Macias, Modeste).
