Women's Tennis Thwarted By Titans, 4-3, In Big West Championship

Indian Wells, CA—The #9 seeded UC Riverside Women's Tennis Team was thwarted for the third consecutive year by #8 seeded Cal State Fullerton in the Big West Championship play-in game, falling 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
These teams battled each other on April 19 of this season, with the Titans coming away with an identical 4-3 victory.
On Thursday, Cal State Fullerton went up 1-0 in the match by winning two of three in doubles. The Titans won at No. 2, 8-3, over Natalie McKay and Kat Saltarelli, but UCR's Kate Bergeson and Courtney Pattugalan won at number three, 8-5, to even things up.
The doubles point came down to number one, and CSF's duo came away with the 8-6 victory to earn the first point.
In singles action, the Highlanders quickly won at No. 4 as McKay won 6-4, 6-0 over Malorie Dela Cruz. Jamie Raney lost at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2, but Taylor Raney defeated Monica Rodriguez 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 to tie the match at 2-2.
Pattugalan then came through with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5 for UC Riverside as they went up 3-2 in the match.
Similar to the last meeting between these teams, the final points came at Nos. 2 and 6. At number two, Saltarelli came back from a first-set 6-3 loss to win 7-5 in the second set, but dropped the third set 6-2 as CSF tied the match at three.
Bergeson took her match to three sets at No. 6, losing 6-3 in the first set but winning 6-3 in the second. In the final set, she rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to tie it up, but could not prevail as Cal State Fullerton won 6-4 to earn the 4-3 victory.
The Highlanders conclude the season with a 3-15 overall record. The Titans now move on to play No. 1 seeded Long Beach State on Friday morning at 8:00 am at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
