UCR Rebounds From 6-5 Extra Innings Loss To Defeat Cal Poly 6-3

Box Score - Cal Poly 6, UC Riverside 5 (9 innings)
Box Score - UC Riverside 6, Cal Poly 3
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (24-28, 7-13) split a doubleheader at Cal Poly (13-35, 5-15) on Friday afternoon, dropping a 6-5 decision in nine innings but rallying for a 6-3 victory at Bob Janssen Field.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Highlanders took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Brittany Keeney homered to left center field following Ariel Shore's lead-off single.
Celina LaFrades hit a solo home run the next inning for the Mustangs as the lead was cut to 2-1. Both teams' bats went quiet through the next four innings as there were just four combined runners left on base.
In the seventh, the Highlanders had runners at second and third with two outs, but could not get an insurance run across. That would come back to haunt them, as Cal Poly scored the equalizer in the bottom of that fame to force extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth on both ends, UC Riverside used a two-out three-run ninth to go up 5-2. With Kaylie Atkinson on second and Shore on first, Keeney singled and advanced to second on the throw, moving Shore to third and scoring Atkinson.
Kayla White then laced a single to right center field, scoring both runners and putting UCR on top, 5-2. The Highlanders would eventually load the bases with consecutive singles by Jessica Vasser and Dionne Anderson, but failed to push another run across as a line out ended the frame.
In the bottom half of that inning, the tides turned as the Mustangs quickly loaded the bases with nobody out. Whitley Gerhart's single scored the lead runner, and after an out, a bases-loaded walk scored another, cutting the lead to 5-4.
That prompted a pitching change from the Highlanders, as Taylor Alvarez took to the circle replacing Jordyn McDonald. Unfortunately, Alvarez issued another bases-loaded walk to tie the game, and a sac fly from Kim Westlund sent the game-winning run across as Cal Poly completed the come-from-behind 6-5 victory.
McDonald pitched 8.1 innings in the loss, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Chloe Wurst earned the win for CP, tossing 1.1 innings.
In the nightcap, the Mustangs got out on top first, scoring two in the first inning. Nora Sobczak and Jillian Andersen hit back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second, and Gerhart came through with a bases-clearing single to send the runners plateward.
In the third, UCR got those runs back and more, putting a four-spot on board to go up 4-2. Yesenia Duenas and Shore both singled to lead off the inning, and Keeney doubled tying the game at 2-2 as both came home to score.
White then drew a walk, prompting a pitching change from Cal Poly, but Vasser singled to load the bases. Anderson's 2-RBI single then put the Highlanders on top as both Keeney and White touched home plate for the 4-2 lead.
The Mustangs got one run back in the third, but UCR responded with two of its own in the fifth. Vasser singled to lead off the frame, and after advancing 60 feet on a wild pitch, Anderson doubled to send her home.
Anderson advanced to third on a ground out, and Atkinson sent her plateward with an RBI single to left field, putting UCR on top 6-3.
Cal Poly threated in the bottom of the seventh with runners at second and third with two outs, but could do no damage as a ground-out ended the frame.
Alvarez pitched a complete game in the win for the Highlanders, giving up three earned runs and nine hits. Jordan Yates was saddled with the loss for the Mustangs.
The rubber match between these teams is slated for Saturday with first pitch beginning at noon.
