Men's Soccer Remains Perfect With 4-0 Victory Over Long Island

Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team ran its season-opening winning streak to four matches Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Long Island (0-4-0) in the final match of the UCI Invitational. (Box Score)
The four goals are the most goals the Highlanders have scored in a match since a 5-0 victory over Alabama A&M on September 4, 2010 (box score/recap), and UCR now has three shutouts on the year.
The Blackbirds helped UC Riverside get on the board in the first period as an LIU defender deflect a Highlanders shot into his own net for an own goal.
UCR outshot the Blackbirds five to one in the first period, but really poured it on over the final 45 minutes of play with an 11-3 shots advantage. Three of those shots found the back of the Long Island net over an eight minute and nine second stretch.
Neil Ignacio doubled the Highlanders lead midway through the second period as Jimmy Martinez and Ulises Mosqueda combined on a give and go before finding Ignacio streaking towards the goal.
Just over four minutes later, Otis Earle won the ball in a scrum in the Blackbirds defensive end, finding Hayden Leslie open on the right side for his first goal of the season.
Earle recorded his first goal of the season less than three minutes later after Eric Gonzalez found him with a cross into the box.
The Highlanders have just one match this weekend as they travel to UNLV on Sunday, September 9 for a 4:30 pm PT kick off against the Rebels.
