1/26/2013 5:49:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Seattle, WA—Travis Smith shattered his own record in the indoor shot put Saturday evening with a distance of 62' 4.5" (19.01m) at the University of Washington's UW Invitational—the first indoor meet of the 2013 season for the Highlanders. That bettered his previous school record of 54' 8.75" (16.68m) set on January 28, 2012.
Smith fouled on his first attempt of the day, but on his second throw, he cleared 60' 10" (18.54m). After two more fouls and a throw of just over 58 feet, Smith set the school record for the second time on the day on his last throw of the meet.
The senior from Clovis, CA finished first in the event, besting competitors from larger programs such as Oregon, Washington, Eastern and Western Washington, Cal and Stanford. His nearest competition came from Stanford's Geoffrey Tabor who cleared 56' 5.75".
A pair of veteran jumpers also turned in top early performances as Ryan Swafford broke the school mark in the men's triple jump finishing second with a distance of 50' 9.5" (15.48m). Ted Hooper came in fifth in the men's long jump with a leap of 22' 11.75" (7.00m), while Swafford came in seventh clearing 22' 1.50" (6.74m), and Michael Harris came in 19th with a distance of 19' 7.50" (5.98m).
Next up for the Highlanders is a trip to Flagstaff, AZ for the Mount T's Invitational on February 1-2.
