Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team snapped a four-match losing skid Friday evening with a 1-0 victory over visiting Sacramento State (Box Score/Video Recap).
The Highlanders (6-4-2, 1-2-0) were in need of a win as they dropped their final two matches of the non-conference portion of their schedule and the first two in Big West play. Sacramento State (2-6-3, 0-3-0) was in a similar position having dropped its first two conference matches of the year as well.
The teams combined for 17 shots in the first period, and both squads had goals pulled off the scoreboard due to offside calls before the half.
UC Riverside turned up the intensity over the final 45 minutes of play, however, outshooting Sacramento State, 12-6, in the second. Ruben Valencia finally broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute as Jonathan Tover found Richie Osborne in the right corner, and Valencia headed Osborne's cross past the Hornets' keeper.
Highlanders goalie Ashkan Khosravi, making his second start of the season after missing the first half of the year with an injury, made four saves on the night to help UC Riverside secure the win.
UC Riverside remains at home this weekend as they welcome UC Davis to the Inland Empire on Sunday, October 13 at 2 pm PT.
