Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team needed a victory Saturday evening to make up some ground in the Big West's South Division, and Tyler Miguel led the way as his two second-half scores gave the Highlanders a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton (Box Score).
The Titans controlled the first half outshooting the Highlanders 7-2. They scored the first goal of the night in the 13th minute following a UCR foul just outside the Highlanders' 18. Spencer Johnson struck the subsequent free kick, arching it over UC Riverside's' wall and into the upper left-hand corner of the goal.
The Highlanders came out more aggressively after the break, and it took just 1:47 before Otis Earle and Richie Osborne combined to find Tyler Miguel for his first score of the season tying the match at one apiece.
The match remained tied over the next 38 minutes, but with 4:43 to go, Earle once again found Miguel with a cross, and the Highlanders had the 2-1 win.
The victory improved UC Riverside's record to 2-4-1 in conference, and moved them to within three points of the third-place Titans, who are now 3-3-1. The Highlanders also have the tiebreaker for the moment over Fullerton as they chase the third and final Big West postseason berth.
UCR is off for the week before heading to Cal State Northridge on Saturday, November 2 for a 7 pm meeting with the nationally-ranked Matadors.
