San Luis Obispo, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team traveled to Cal Poly Friday evening for the Big West Conference opener for both clubs, but it was the Mustangs who scored four unanswered goals on their way to a 5-1 victory (Box Score).
Cal Poly (8-3-0, 1-0-0) controlled the match in the first 45 minutes of play outshooting the Highlanders 11-2. Only one of those shots found the back of the net, however, when Mackenzie Pridham converted on a 20-yarder for his ninth score of the season.
Statistically the match was closer after the break everywhere but on the scoreboard as the Mustangs enjoyed just a 9-6 edge in shots in the second period. But Cal Poly made four of those nine shots count as Ari Lassiter recorded his fourth and fifth goals of the season, Pridham netted his 10th of the year and George Malki was credited with his second..
The Highlanders got on the board in the 78th minute of play when Aaron Long found Otis Earle for his first score of the season.
Tyler Miguel hit the cross bar with a shot with 4:26 to go, but that was as close as UC Riverside would come to scoring the rest of the night.
The loss is the third straight for the Highlanders (5-3-2, 0-1-0) who started the season unbeaten in their first seven matches. UCR remains on the road this weekend traveling to UC Santa Barbara for a Sunday, October 6 meeting with the Gauchos. Kickoff is slated for 5 pm PT.
