Juan Mendoza's First Half Goal Leads Men's Soccer To 1-0 Win Over #12 CSUN
11/2/2013 9:06:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Northridge—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team took one step closer to locking up a 2013 postseason berth Saturday evening as Juan Mendoza's first half score proved to be all the Highlanders would need in a 1-0 shutout of 12th-ranked Cal State Northridge (Box Score).
Coupled with UC Irvine's win over Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside now finds itself in a tie with the Titans for third place in the South Division with two matches to play. The top three teams in each Division in the Big West advance to the conference tournament, and the Highlanders currently own the tiebreaker with Fullerton.
Juan Mendoza gave the Highlanders all the scoring they would need in the 12th minute of play as Richie Osborne found him for his first goal of the season. UC Riverside then turned the game over to its defense, which posted its seventh shutout of the year breaking the team record for clean sheets in a season. Goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi recorded three saves in the victory as he was credited with his third shutout in six matches.
UCR's final two matches of the regular season are at the friendly confines of the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium—vs. UC Irvine on Wednesday, November 6 and vs. Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, November 9. Both matches kick off at 7 pm PT.
