Riverside—UC Riverside lost a 3-0 decision to San Jose State in their home-opener at the UCR Soccer Stadium Friday afternoon. The Highlanders are now 3-2 on the season and the Spartans improve to 3-1.
The two teams played a very physical match with,26 fouls called throughout the game. Spartan forward Ricky Dorrego got behind a very tough UCR defense on a give-and-go and put it past the diving UCR keeper, Charles Alamo, at the 23:10 mark for a 1-0 SJSU lead.
Both teams continued to compete and the frustration of numerous scoring chances that were broken up throughout the game by both defenses seemed to boil over in the second half. During a five minute span centered around the 70th minute, two yellow cards and a red card were given out resulting with UCR having to play a man down the rest of regulation.
SJSU increased their lead to 2-0 at the 65:00 mark, Efrain Burgos Jr scored off of a free-kick just over the heads of the wall of Highlander players and into the top left corner. Ismael Ibarra put the Spartans up for good in the 79th minute after taking a long pass that came from midfield and beat Alamo in a one-on-one encounter to make it 3-0.
Highlander senior Andrew Villalobos led the UCR attack with three shots on goal and Alamo finished with six saves. UCR hosts Sacramento State on Sunday at the UCR Soccer Stadium at 3 p.m.
