Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team (21-23, 2-9) looked to even its Big West Conference series against Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon leading 2-1 heading into the seventh, but the Matadors scored a pair of runs late to earn the 3-2, come-from-behind victory at Amy S. Harrison Field. Box Score. Watch the video highlights.
CSUN (28-19, 5-6) won game one, 8-0, earlier in the day, but had its offense held in check until the sixth inning as UCR pitcher Sophie Slagle allowed just four hits through the first five frames.
The Highlanders were also kept off the boards until the fifth, but were able to capitalize by scoring a pair of runs.
With runners at first and second with one out, Haley Harris executed a squeeze bunt sacrifice to bring home Kris DeAnda from third. Natalie Sanchez then followed with a double to score Karina Romero and give UCR a 2-0 lead.
The Matadors finally got to Slagle cutting the lead in half in the top of the sixth, as Taylor Glover came home on a sac fly from Taylor Nate.
The next inning, CSUN took the lead scoring two runs as UCR committed an error and allowed three hits.
With runners at second and third, Abby Linn reached on a fielder's choice, and the runner from third scored on a throwing error by the Highlanders third baseman as UCR attempted to run down the runner before mishandling the ball. A batter later, Madalyne Handy bunt singled to drive in Kaitlin Toerner for what would be the winning run, 3-2.
The Highlanders were in position to rally back in the seventh, as DeAnda drew a lead-off walk, and Dionne Anderson singled to left field to put the winning run on base. Unfortunately for the blue and gold, three straight outs ended the comeback attempt as the Matadors held on for the victory.
Earlier in the game, UCR drew five walks during the first four innings, but stranded all five baserunners. Two of those walks were issued to Anderson, and the senior stole base both times to tie the Big West Conference record for most stolen bases in a single-season with 39.
The Highlanders were held without a hit until the fifth inning when they finally broke through the scoreless tie.
Slagle took the loss for UC Riverside, while Jordan Saucedo earned the win, and Crystal Maas was credited with the save for CSUN.
These teams face off in game three of the league series Saturday, April 19 at 12 pm PT at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
