Offense Stumbles For Softball In 3-0 And 4-1 Doubleheader Loss At UC Davis
4/26/2014 5:38:00 PM | Softball
Davis, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team lost a doubleheader to UC Davis Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (box score) and 4-1 (box score), at La Rue Field in Big West Conference action.
The Aggies (17-28, 6-8) kept the Highlanders (21-26, 2-12) bats at bay as they combined for seven hits over the two games, while UCD garnered 14 hits.
In the first contest, UCD put a three-spot on the board in the second, and that would prove to be all the runs needed for the win.
UC Riverside stranded five baserunners throughout the game, including two in the fourth inning putting together a small rally. But it wasn't enough to generate runs, as the blue and gold were shutout for the fourth time in 14 league games.
In the second game, the Highlanders looked to get a win to split the series heading into Sunday's finale, but UC Davis scored first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. That score would hold until the fifth when the Aggies added another run in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to go up 4-0.
UC Riverside only had one baserunner on until the fifth, but in the seventh, finally stopped the scoreless streak to cut the margin to 4-1.
Natalie Sanchez hit a solo homer to put the Highlanders on the board, and Kaylie Atkinson followed with a single to keep the inning going. Ashley Ercolano then reached on an error to put two on and the tying run at the plate, but UCR was down to its last out, and could not extend the rally as a final foul out ended the game.
UCR will face UCD on Sunday, April 27 in the three-game series finale scheduled for noon PT in Davis, CA.
