Men's Golf Hangs On To Finish 9th At The Bill Cullum Invitational

Simi Valley, CA-The UC Riverside Men's Golf Team held on to its ninth place position on the final day of the Bill Cullum Invitational, despite a charge from Big West rival Cal State Fullerton. Matt Lutz (T26) and Sam Gillis (T29) were the top finishers for Highlanders after the three rounds were completed at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.(view team standings / view individual leaderboard).

The Highlanders were five over par entering the final round of play, 22 shots back of front-running Loyola Marymount (-17). UCR had plans to move up the leaderboard, but instead found itself fighting off a challenge from Cal State Fullerton, who as a team shot the fourth best round of the day (289, +1), however the Titans still finished one shot behind the Highlanders.

The Lions of Loyola Marymount lead Seattle University (-14) by three strokes, and Santa Clara (-12) by five entering the day and stayed on form as they shot a five under 283 as a team to claim the title. Pepperdine shot a tournament best team round of 279, -9 on the day, which was good enough to move up from fourth to second place, followed by Santa Clara, who shot even par on the day to remain in third.

Brandon Tsujimoto had the Highlander low round of the day with an even par 72, landing him tied for 36th. Andrew Spilman (226) finshed tied for 64th, followed by Anthony Bonales (236, 86th) and Luke Park (247, T87).

Seattle University's Joe Harvie started the day off with a one shot lead, but was unable to hold off Southern Utah's Fidel Concepcion who shot the low round of the day (67) to post a -9, 207 winning total. Harvie shot a 77 on the day, which landed him in fourth behind Braden Bear (209) of Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara's Hayden Sheih (208).

Seven other Big West teams competed in the event, led by Long Beach State (5th), followed by UC Santa Barbara (6th), Cal Poly (7th), Cal State Fullerton (10th), Hawai'i (T13th), UC Irvine (15th) and CSUN (16th).
