Men's Soccer Falls 4-1 At Syracuse

Box Score Syracuse, NY—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team took on Syracuse Friday afternoon in the first match of the Central New York Classic, falling to the Orange by a score of 4-1.

Syracuse applied the offensive pressure early outshooting the Highlanders, 10-3, in the first half. None of those shots connected until Liam Callahan scored from 12 feet out into the right corner of the goal.

It was still a 1-0 match as the team's exited the locker room at intermission, but the Orange made it 2-0 in the 48th minute of play when Korab Syla's shot glanced off UC Riverside goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi's hands and into the goal. Nearly 12 minutes later, Syracuse's Oyvind Alveth recorded his second goal of the season, scoring from the right side into the left lower 90.

The Highlanders (1-2-0) got on the board in the 62nd minute as Stephen Copley's header off of a Romario Lomeli corner kick made its way past 'Cuse keeper Austin Aviza. UC Riverside's offense matched Syracuse shot for shot in the second, as each squad was credited with seven, and the Highlanders had five corner kicks in the period compared to four for the Orange.

However, the Highlanders were unable to dent the back of the net the rest of the way, and Noah Rhynhart ended the scoring with 4:49 to go as he redirected Ben Polk's pass in off the left post.

The Highlanders take on Colgate this Sunday, September 6 in their final match of the Central New York Classic. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 am PT.
