Final Round Push Comes Up Short, As Women's Golf Finishes Second In The Battle At The Rock

Riverside—Entering the final round at the Battle at the Rock, the UC Riverside Women's Golf team was in second, 14 shots behind Santa Clara.

UCR shot a final round two under 286 as a team, their best team score of the season, however it was not enough to catch front running Santa Clara. The Broncos (291, 917) were five shots worse than the Highlanders over the final 18 holes, but their day one 14 stroke lead held up to claim the team title. Butler (942) finished in third place after a final round six over par 294.

Haley Wian (228, +12)  moved up to finish in second place and Paris Griffith (229, +13) to third, as they were two of five golfers in the field to fire a two under par 70 in the final round, the lowest on the day.

Jakeishya Le was also under par for the Highlanders with a one under 71, bouncing back from an opening 84 and a second round 85.

Santa Clara's Kristin Le (220, +4), fired a 70 in the final round to maintain her day one lead and claim the individual title.
Butler's Christine Cates had a hole in one on the picturesque 168 yard par 3, 14th hole.

"I'm proud of the team and the way we bounced back today after the first two rounds. Even though we didn't win, we discovered what we are capable of when we go all out. We had three of our five players shoot under par today, and we shot our best round of the year—that's definitely something to build off of", said Coach Mary Ritchie.

In five events this season, UCR has two titles and a runner-up finish. They swing back into action at the UNA Red Rocks Invitational, March 5-6 in Sedona, AZ.
