Box Score 2 Riverside—For the second year in a row, the UC Riverside Softball team went 5-0 in the Amy S. Harrison Classic. After winning their first three games of the event, the Highlanders were matched-up in a double header against San Diego, who also won their first three contests.
In the first game of the double header, the Toreros got a run in second inning, and three in third before the Highlanders got on the board in the fourth on Chelsey Holley single that brought in Haley Harris to make it, 4-1.
San Diego would lead off the top of the fifth with back-to-back homeruns to make it a five run ballgame. Maddie Richard walked to start the bottom of the sixth inning, which would be the theme of the inning. Richard would score when Holley walked with the bases loaded. UCR would get four free passes with the bases juiced along with a Hannah Rodriguez two run single that put them ahead 7-6.
Kaylynn Pierce come on in relief of Tayler Misfeldt in the top of the seventh and closed out the victory--striking two of the three batters she faced for her second save of the season.
In the afternoon game, UCR jumped out to a four run lead in the bottom of the first on two hits, which included a two-run single by Stephanie Tickemyer. Natalie Sanchez singled through the left side, scoring two more runs to put UCR ahead, 6-0. Tickemyer stepped to the dish in the third and tripled, scoring pinch runner Courtnie Ploesch. The Highlanders got a run on a Rodriguez sac fly to put the game into mercy rule territory, 8-1.
The Toreros would get three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it a one run game. Pierce, who started the game, would return to close out the second one run victory of the day, 8-7.
The UC Riverside Softball Team returns to action against Utah State Saturday March 5, when they host the Highlander Classic.
