Lomeli Breaks Career Assist Mark, but Men's Soccer Falls, 3-2, In Double Overtime
9/25/2016 4:32:00 PM | Men's Soccer
San Francisco—Romario Lomeli recorded two assists Sunday at San Francisco moving him past Otis Earle '14 into sole possession of first place on the Highlanders' career assists chart. It wasn't enough, however, as the Dons scored the game winner with 49 seconds remaining in the second overtime to come away with a 3-2 victory.
San Francisco took a 1-0 lead just before the half as Davi Ramos netted his second goal of the season in the 43rd minute of play. That score held up until 17:10 remaining in the second half when Lomeli (Panorama City, CA) found Stephen Copley (Torrance, CA) for a header and his second score of the year. That assist was the 15th of Lomeli's career, and pushed him past Earle into first place on UCR's career list.
The Dons took the lead again with just 2:05 left on the clock on Aaron Lombardi's first goal of 2016. Lomeli responded with just 34 seconds to go in regulation by finding Antonio Lokossou (Phoenix, AZ) for another header, sending the match into overtime.
Neither team found the back of the net for the first 19-plus minutes of bonus soccer, but with 49 seconds left in the second OT, Stephen Copley was whistled for a foul and a yellow card in the Highlanders' defensive 18. That set up a penalty kick by Santiago Digiuseppe, and he beat Vincent Morales (Bellflower, CA) into the left corner of the net for the golden goal.
The Highlanders return home this week to kick off the Big West portion of their schedule with a Thursday, September 29 match against UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm PT, and a Saturday, October 1 tilt against Cal Poly at 7 pm.
