Tempe, AZ– Freshman pitcher Haley Marschall allowed just one run in a complete game seven-hitter in UCR's, 1-0, loss to New Mexico in the first game of the day. Jenae Lockwood hit the first homerun of the season for the Highlanders in their, 4-1, defeat at the hands of Kajikawa Classic host Arizona State.
Marschall kept the Lobos off balance for four innings allowing just four hits and no runs. The Highlanders also struggled to create scoring chances as they had three hits through the first three innings–all singles.
New Mexico finally scratched in the fifth, when they got a leadoff double by Deflora, who was brought on a single by from Casados.
UCR, still in search of a hit since the third inning, got a two-out single from Jenna Curtan. Maddy Richard, who had two hits on the day, then reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed her to moved up to second and Curtan to third.
Freshman Danielle Ortega came to plate, and lifted a fly ball to left field that was just short of being the Highlanders' second walk-off in as many days–the game ended 1-0.
In the second game of the day, the Highlanders were outslugged by tournament hosts Arizona State in a game in which all five runs were scored via the longball.
ASU got on the board in the fourth, when Marissa Stankiewicz hit a two-run shot to right that give the home side a 2-0 advantage. With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Margaret Stahm homered down the left line with a runner aboard to make it a four-run ballgame.
The Highlanders managed just one hit until the top of the seventh, when sophomore catcher Jenae Lockwood smashed a solo homerun over the left field wall to put UCR on the board. That would be last run of the 2017 Kajikawa Classic for UC Riverside, who fell 4-1.
Coach Palmer's squad will hit the road once more next week in the Campbell-Cartier Classic in San Diego February 18-19.
