Riverside- The UC Riverside Softball Team knocked off Cal Poly, 2-1, on a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth.
UC Riverside (27-23, 9-10) starter Tayler Misfeldt went pitch for pitch with Cal Poly (33-18, 9-10) starter and Big West win leader Sierra Hyland through seven innings, allowing just four hits with a walk compared to Hyland, who gave up three hits, but surrendered five walks.
Misfeldt needed just 88 pitches to get through seven, while Hyland hurled 132.
With two out and two on in the top of the eighth, Hyland helped her own cause with a single up the middle that scored the game's first run.
Coach Palmer then turned to Rebecca Faulkner, who got the Highlanders out of the inning with a strikeout.
Hyland got the first two outs of the eighth inning on five pitches, a Hannah Rodriguez pop up, and a Faulkner fly out. Jenae Lockwood stepped in the box, and laced a clean single towards the center fielder, who bobbled it allowing her to go to second.
Senior Stephanie Tickemyer then drove a 1-1 offering past the center fielder for a game-tying RBI triple. She would be stranded there as Hyland got a strikeout to get to the ninth.
Faulkner took the ball to start the ninth, and retired the Mustangs in order on just nine pitches.
Senior Shylene Helms led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left. Danielle Ortega then laid down a sac bunt to move Helms over to second.
With the count 3-0 to Jenna Curtan, Hyland intentionally put her on with a ball in the opposite batter's box.
Following a Maddy Richard groundout, Rodriguez came up to bat. Hyland, who walked a season-high seven, tossed her second wild pitch of the game. This one however, hit the dirt, then bounced off the the catcher' s mask down the third base line, allowing Helms to scamper home from third for the walk-off, 2-1, victory.
Faulkner (1-4) earned her first win of the year, while Hyland dropped to 20-12.
The Highlanders complete their regular season with a double header that gets underway at 1pm.
