Steve Lubratich was an All-American shortstop for the Highlanders who led UC Riverside to its first national championship during the 1977 season. That year he set the school mark for games played with 62. He would later play for the California Angeles in 1981 and 1983, leading the Pacific Coast League in hits while playing for Spokane during the 1982 season. Lubratich went on to manage the Spokane Indians (1988), the Riverside Red Wave (1989)  and the Whichita Wranglers (1990-91) in the San Diego Padres organization. He would later serve as a roving hitting instructor and advance scout for the Padres before being promoted to assistant general manager in 1995. In 1996, Padres General Manager Randy Smith took the same position with the Detroit Tigers, and Lubratich made the move with him. In 2002 he joined the front office of the Cleveland Indians where he is currently (2010) the team's director of player personnel.
