Riverside—UC Davis scored the game's only goal in the 38th minute to defeat host UC Riverside 1-0 Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The Highlanders drop their second straight match to fall to 3-6-1 while the Aggies improve to 6-4-0.
The decisive goal came at 37:23 on a UC Davis breakaway. Quincy Amarikwa pounced on a high loose ball and beat the UCR defense, firing home from just inside the 18-yard box for his fifth goal of the season.
Both teams had their opportunities to score, with UCD holding a 10-9 shot advantage, although the Highlander defense did well to charge down most of their opposition's attempts. In the first half, UCR freshman forward Nathan Paterson (Modesto, CA) saw his 20-yard attempt sail just high while freshman forward Jeremy Clay's (Fontana, CA) long-range effort was tipped over by Aggie goalkeeper Charles Warne. Warne made one save for the visitors.
In the second half, a free kick from junior midfielder Andrew Hills (Loma Linda, CA) went just wide of the right post. Davis' best chance in the period came on a header by Paul Marcoux that was gathered by UCR junior goalkeeper Charles Alamo (San Luis Obispo, CA) for Alamo's only save of the day.
After eight consecutive games of scoring at least one goal, UCR finds itself in a bit of a dry spell, having been shut out in the last two matches.
