Northridge, CA—UC Riverside played to a 0-0 tie with Cal State Northridge on a very emotional Saturday afternoon in Northridge, CA. Before the game the Highlanders and Matadors honored CSUN soccer player Jay Singh who passed away earlier in the week.
The Highlanders (4-3-4, 1-1-2 Big West) picked up a point with the tie to keep a post-season berth in their sights. UCR entered the match in third place in the conference standings before playing to their fourth tie in their last six matches. The Matadors (4-2-4, 0-0-3 Big West) also picked up a point playing to their third tie in as many conference matches this season.
CSUN outshot UCR 14-7 but the Highlanders were the only squad to get shots off in the extra periods. UCR also had to play a man down in nearly all of both overtimes after a red-card was issued against the Highlanders early in the first overtime. UCR had 22 fouls called against them throughout the match as they continued their aggressive style of play by attacking every loose ball and meeting every Matador attacker that received the ball before they could make a move towards the net.
Highlander senior keeper Charles Alamo picked up his fourth shutout of the season after stopping six shots in the match.
UCR hosts two teams at opposite ends of the standings next week. Last place Cal State Fullerton comes to the UCR Soccer Stadium on Wednesday at 3 p.m. along with defending national champions and first place UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 3 p.m.
