(Cullowhee, NC) - The UC Riverside women's basketball team (0-2) lost at the buzzer to Liberty University (1-1) in the second round of the preseason WNIT on Friday afternoon at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, NC.
Down 43-35 with four minutes to go, Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) hit two three pointers to bring the Highlanders within two, 43-41, with just over a minute to play. Alyssa Morris (Fresno, CA) then drained a three-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining to put UCR up by one point, 44-43. However, Megan Frazee connected on a layup for the Lady Flames at the buzzer to hand UCR a 45-44 loss.
Nkele led the Highlanders with a team-high 16 points while Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA) added eight. Morris came off the bench to score seven points and grab seven boards, while Roney Friend (Los Angeles, CA) had six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Heading into the locker room down 22-17, the Highlanders opened up the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 26-22 lead capped off by two straight jumpers from Tainoisouti Lott (Moreno Valley, CA) with just under sixteen minutes remaining.
UCR extended their lead to six, 32-26, at the 12:20 mark off a Friend jumper, but Liberty's Avery Warley hit two free throws at the 5:45 mark to give the Lady Flames their first lead of the second half, 36-35. From there, Liberty's lead grew to eight as both Lott and Gbewonyo fouled out.
The Highlanders conclude the preseason WNIT on Saturday, Nov. 22 against Lafayette at 6:30 pm in Cullowhee, NC.
