Softball Ends Conference Skid With 6-4 Win Over Cal State Fullerton

The UC Riverside softball team (15-24, 1-5) ended its string of 33 consecutive conference losses with a 6-4 road win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon. The last Highlander win in conference play came back on April 22, 2006 in a 3-1 road decision over Long Beach State.
The teams were tied at two heading into the Highlander half of the sixth, when Brooke Hebenton stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and just one out. She lined the first pitch she saw into centerfield to score the go-ahead run, and Amanda Klimczak followed with a pinch-hit two-run single to make the score 5-2.
The Titans (18-19-1, 2-4) battled back in the bottom of the sixth loading the bases with no outs in the frame. A hit by pitch made the score 5-3, but UCR's defense threw two runners out at the plate sandwiched around an RBI single to limit the damage and take a 5-4 lead into the seventh.
Marissa Alvidrez, who had come on in relief the previous inning, stroked her ninth home run of the season to left field giving the Highlanders a two-run cushion heading into the bottom of the seventh. Fullerton put two runners on with two outs in the frame before Alvidrez induced a grounder back to the circle to end the game.
Highlander starter Christin Songer (6-5) picked up the win allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work while Alvidrez picked up her second save of the year. Titans' starter Christine Hinder, who picked up the wins in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, took the complete-game loss giving up five earned runs on 10 hits.
UC Riverside is off until this weekend when they host a three-game Big West Conference series with Pacific (21-23, 3-3) at Amy S. Harrison Field. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale is slated for noon.

Alvidrez needs one home run to tie and two home runs to break the single-season school record of ten set by Melissa Sanchez in 2006.
