(Flagstaff, AZ) - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team improved to 2-2 on the year as they held on to a 70-63 victory on Friday afternoon against North Dakota (1-4) in the first game of the Northern Arizona Classic at the Rolle Activity Center in Flagstaff, AZ. Senior Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
The Highlanders came out of the gate strong scoring nine straight points, capped off by a Nkele jumper at the 17:40 mark, before the Fighting Sioux got on the board with three and a half gone by. UCR extended their lead to 30 points, 49-19, off a Jessie Schmuckal (Chula Vista, CA) jumper right before halftime. The Highlanders shot 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the field and a blistering 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from beyond the arc in the first half.
However, UCR struggled in the second half shooting 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from the field as North Dakota came back and outscored the Highlanders 44-21.
