(Flagstaff, AZ) - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (2-3) lost a close contest 59-56 to Bradley University in the second game of the Northern Arizona Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Rolle Activity Center in Flagstaff, AZ.
The Highlanders were up by one with a minute and half remaining, but the Braves (5-1) took the lead 57-56 on a jumper and then sealed the game with two free throws with 12 seconds left. The Highlanders were down by as many as eight points in the second half but came back and took their first lead of the half, 43-42, off a Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) three-pointer with nine minutes remaining. UCR then pushed the lead to six 50-44 off a Jessie Schmuckal (Chula Vista, CA) three-pointer at the 5:55 mark before Bradley scored seven unanswered points to claim a 51-50 lead with just under four minutes to go.
UCR and Bradley then traded baskets until Nkele was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer and made 2-of-3 to put the Highlanders up by one, 56-55, with 1:31 remaining. However, UCR could not stop Bradley as MacKenzie Westcott hit a jumper and then Skye Johnson closed out the game with two free throws.
Ronéy Friend (Los Angeles, CA) led the Highlanders with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA) added 14 points while Nkele had 11. Chanel Foster (Tustin, CA) contributed a team-high six boards and a game-high five assists for UCR.
