
Women's Basketball Falls 52-47 to Nevada

(Reno, NV) - The UC Riverside women's basketball team (3-7) lost their second consecutive nail-biter 52-47 to the Nevada Wolfpack (6-5) on Sunday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center in Reno, NV.
The Highlanders were down by as many as 10 points in the second half but rallied to within two on two Alyssa Morris (Fresno, CA) free throws with 50 seconds remaining in the game. However, UCR could not catch the Wolfpack as they hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA) led UCR with 14 points while Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) added 13 points and a game-high 16 boards.
In the first half, the Highlanders were held scoreless for the first four minutes of play but came back and took their first lead of the game at the 11:03 mark as Gbewonyo drove through the lane and connected on a layup to put the Highlanders up 7-5.
UCR used stifling defense to hold the Wolfpack scoreless for the next seven minutes from the 15:19 mark until 8:01 left in the half. The Highlanders then opened up a six point lead, 18-12, with three minutes remaining before heading into the locker rooms with a 21-18 advantage. Nkele led all scores at the half with 10 points and 12 rebounds as UCR out-rebounded Nevada 32 to 16.
The Wolfpack rallied early in the second half as they scored eight straight points after just two minutes of play to take a 26-21 lead. UCR then closed the gap to two points on Gbewonyo's layup at the 15:06 mark.
