UCR defeats a ranked opponent for the first time in Division I history
Box Score
(Riverside, CA) - UCR senior Tainoisouti Lott (Moreno Valley, CA) hit two clutch free-throws with 14 seconds left to give the UC Riverside Women's Basketball team (3-4) a 50-47 upset over #16 Vanderbilt at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time in UCR's eight-year Division I history that they have defeated a ranked opponent.
The Highlanders used stifling defense to hold the Commodores (8-2), who averaged 75.3 points per game prior to today's matchup, to just 34.8 percent shooting on 16-of-46 from the field. Senior Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) led the Highlanders with 17 points on 8-of-13 from the field.
The game remained close in the first half as neither team led by more than four points, and the teams entered the locker room tied at 27 apiece. Jessie Schmukal (Chula Vista, CA) provided some additional scoring for the Highlanders off the bench in the first half as she scored six points on 2-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc.
The second half was much of the same for both teams as the scoring went back and forth throughout. With three minutes to go UCR had a two point lead, but saw the Commodores retake the lead 47-46 after Christina Wirth connected on a three-point play.
With 50 seconds to go, Nkele then scored on a layup to put the Highlanders up by one, 48-47. After two missed Vanderbilt attempts, Lott came down with the rebound and was fouled with 14 seconds left. She hit both attempts to seal the game for the Highlanders as the Commodores last second shot was off the mark.
Nkele's 17 points and team-high eight rebounds paced the Highlanders. Chanel Foster (Tustin, CA) scored a season-high eight points while Seyram Gbewonyo added seven. The Highlanders have a week off for finals before traveling to Pac-10 powerhouses Arizona State and Arizona on Dec. 14 and 17 respectively.
