Irvine, CA - The Big West Conference announced prior to the holidays that a total of 117 student-athletes from the nine member institutions were honored on the 2009 Big West Conference Fall All-Academic Team for the sports of women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's cross country.
UC Riverside placed 16 athletes on the team, the second-most of any Big West School. Men's soccer led the Highlanders fall sports with five athletes: Robert Cate, Michael Galland, Joel Garcia, David Lozano, and Cody Suppe. Women's soccer was next with four athletes: Kristy Adcock, Megan Fike, Heidi Gassaway, and Ashley Parks.
Men's and women's cross country placed three athletes each on the all-academic team: Steven Crum, Talal Khan, Daniel Lindstrom, Natalie Aceves, Jenessia Navarro, and Brittany Reimer, while volleyball had one athlete named to the team in Kelly Simpson.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
UC Irvine led all Big West institutions with 20 Fall All-Academic selections, followed by UC Riverside with 16. UC Santa Barbara placed 15 student-athletes on the team, while Pacific contributed 14 and UC Davis 13. Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge tied with 12 certificates apiece, followed by Long Beach State with eight and Cal Poly with seven.
