Missed Free Throws Haunt Highlanders In 76-65 Loss At Southern Utah

Southern Utah 76 UC Riverside 65 Box Score
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team dug itself a hole by missing 15 of 27 free throw attempts on the evening and were unable to make up the difference falling on the road to Southern Utah, 76-65. Kyle Austin led the Highlanders offensive efforts with a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double.
UC Riverside built up several six point leads in the first half, the last of which came at 25-19 with 7:28 to go in the period. The Highlanders hit a scoring drought immediately thereafter, however, allowing the Thunderbirds to go on a 9-0 run and take the lead 28-25 with under four minutes to play. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half and Southern Utah left the floor with a 35-34 lead.
The biggest concern for the Highlanders coming out of the locker room at the break was the team's foul difficulties. Three of their primary post players—Konner Veteto, David Chavarria and Larry Gurganious —were all in foul trouble. Chavarria was called for four fouls in three minutes of play; Veteto picked up three fouls in four minutes and Gurganious was whistled for three personals.
Kyle Austin led UC Riverside's offensive efforts in the first 20 minutes of play just missing out on a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
UCR's defense in the first was much improved from two nights ago as they held SUU to 42.9 percent from the field including 30.0 percent from three-point range. All of the fouls they were committing, however, sent the Thunderbirds on a parade to the free throw line in the first as they connected on 14 of 19 from the charity stripe.
Southern Utah still led by one, 50-49, with nine and a half minutes to play, but they scored the next six points, eventually pushing their lead to double-digits and never trailed the rest of the way.
UC Riverside's defense faltered in the second half allowing Southern Utah to connect on 13 of 21 shots in the period including 7 of 10 from three-point range. The Highlanders struggled just as much on the offensive end of the floor making just 28.1 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Highlanders take a break for the holidays, but return to the court at San Deigo State on Tuesday, December 29 at 7 pm PT. We would like to wish all of you a very happy holiday, and we look forward to seeing you at the Student Recreation Center in the New Year.
