9/30/2009 10:12:38 PM | Men's Soccer
Cal State Northridge 3, UC Riverside 1
The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (1-7-0, 0-1-0) opened conference play Wednesday evening hosting Cal State Northridge (6-2-1, 1-0-0) at the UCR Soccer Stadium, but the Highlanders were forced to play a man down for 25 minutes in the second half eventually falling to the Matadors 3-1. Cesar Diaz (pictured) scored UCR's lone goal on the night.
In the first half, CSUN had the better of the play outshooting the Highlanders 11-5, but neither team was able to score and they entered halftime tied at zero.
The Matadors got on the scoreboard with 6:48 gone in the second as Sunghyun Kim re-directed a Matthew Chavez pass past UCR keeper Cody Suppé. UC Riverside picked up the equalizer less than two minutes later when Diaz corralled a Michael Vegas pass in the box and slid it past Matadors keeper Michael Abalos.
With 28:08 left in the match, UCR defender Jose Diaz picked up his second yellow card of the evening forcing the Highlanders to play a man down. The Matadors outshot UCR 19-7 in the second, but Suppé and his defensive charges held strong for the next 14 minutes. With 13:20 to go, Cal State Northridge midfielder Dylan Riley re-directed Kim's free kick into the net for a 2-1 Matadors advantage.
CSUN's Devin Deldo picked up his second yellow card in the match with less than four minutes left to put the team's back at even strength.
The Highlanders pressed for the tying goal, bringing Suppé forward for a corner kick with under 30 seconds to play, however, a quick counter sent the UC Riverside defense scrambling towards their own goal. Suppé made it back into the box in time, but wasn't able to stop the three-on-one break that led to a Joe Franco goal and the final 3-1 margin of victory.
UNLV comes to the UCR Soccer Stadium this Saturday, October 3 at 5 pm PT for the Highlanders' final non-conference match of the year.
