Men's Soccer Drops Season-Opener 1-0 At Sacramento State
9/4/2009 6:40:24 PM | Men's Soccer
Sacramento State 1, UC Riverside 0
The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (0-1-0) opened the 2009 season Friday on the road at Sacramento State, and a first-half goal by the Hornets was all the scoring on the night as the Highlanders fell, 1-0. Redshirt freshman Cody Suppé (pictured) made the first start of his collegiate career in goal for the Highlanders recording five saves on the evening while allowing just the single Hornets' goal.
Sacramento State (1-0-1) scored early as Matthew Tellez picked up his first goal of the season on a cross from Ernesto Carranza. Fernando Cabadas also was credited with an assist on the play. From that point on, the UCR defense tightened up facing 16 more Hornets' shots without allowing a goal.
On offense the Highlanders spread the possessions evenly with eight different players taking credit for the nine UCR shots on the night, but none found their mark.
The Highlanders played a man up for 20 minutes in the second period as Sacramento State's Adam Bettencourt picked up a red card with 34:38 remaining in the match. UCR was unable to take advantage, however, and gave back the edge with 15:01 remaining when the Highlanders' Michael Galland received a red card of his own.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Sunday, September 6 road tilt with Saint Mary's beginning at 3 p.m.
