Riverside, CA—The Amy S. Harrison Classic got underway Friday with three games as the Highlanders swept Idaho State in the first two, 9-2 and 3-0, while Harvard picked up a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Northern Illinois in the day's third game.
Idaho State got on the scoreboard early in the first game against UC Riverside scoring two runs in the top of the first, stringing together four two-out singles and capitalizing on a UCR error to take a 2-0 lead.
It was the last runs the Bengals would score all day.
Highlanders starter Marissa Alvidrez settled down after the first allowing just three hits over the final six innings of play and striking out two for her seventh win of the season.
UC Riverside got one run back in the third on an RBI single by Taylor Thomas that scored Ariel Shore. In the fourth, UCR took the lead with a little help from some sloppy Bengals defense. Brooke Hebenton drew a one-out walk, and Alexis Pickett followed with a bunt single that moved Hebenton to second. Idaho State catcher Brittany Olsin's throw to first to try and nail Pickett sailed past first baseman Courtney Darby and on into rightfield. Rightfielder Desirae Hoffman charged in, but the ball got by her allowing both baserunners to score for a 3-2 UCR lead.
The Highlanders plated four more in the fourth and another pair in the fifth for the 9-2 win. Seven of the nine UCR starters had hits in the game, and Pickett drove in three runs.
Lauran Molina got the start in the circle in the second game for the Highlanders and she picked up right where Alvidrez left off allowing just two Bengals hits over seven innings for her second win of the season.
UC Riverside had difficulty scoring off of Idaho State starter Kandis Clesson in the early innings of game two, as they managed just three hits through the first four frames. The Highlanders finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Molina drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0 UCR..
JoJo Mendoza connected on her first homer of the season in the sixth scoring Pickett who doubled to center to open the inning and giving Molina a three-run advantage to work with. The Mission Viejo junior allowed just one hit in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Highlanders had their ninth win of the season in the books.
Day two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic has three games on the docket—Harvard takes on Idaho State at 9 am PT, the Bengals take on Northern Illinois at 11:30 am, and the Huskies and Crimson tangle again at 2 pm.
