Ek Wins Individual Title As Team Places Second At CSUB Tourney

Second Round
Bakersfield, CA - Freshman Amelia Ek (pictured) won her first-ever collegiate tournament on Tuesday after shooting 77-77 for a 154 total -- two strokes better than the next competitor -- helping the UC Riverside women's golf team to a second place finish out of six teams at the CSU Bakersfield Tournament at Bakersfield Country Club.
The Highlanders bettered their team score from the first day by four strokes, shooting a 323-319=642 to finish seven strokes behind team leader Cal Poly at 635. Cal State Northridge finished third with a two-round 659.
Ek's win is the first for a Highlanders golfer since Jennifer Bermingham won the Lamkin Cup/Cal Poly Invitational on Nov. 5-6, 2007.
UCR had two other top-10 finishers as Natalie Guidry finished in fifth place, firing 80-78-158, while Alexandra Erdman placed eighth with a 162 (83-79).
Rounding out the Highlanders squad, Linda Ong tied for 29th (86-85=171) while Denyse Neville tied for 33rd (83-92=179). Playing as an individual, Tiffany Koyano tied for 12th shooting 82-83=165.
The Highlanders return to the links on Monday-Tuesday Mar. 29-30 at the Anteater Invitational in Dove Canyon, CA.
First Round

Freshman Amelia Ek shot a 77 to lead the squad and place second individually, just two strokes behind the leader, Cal Poly's Julia Heath Puscheck with a 75.
Natalie Guidry finished second on the team with a first-round 80 to tie for sixth. Alexandra Erdman and Denyse Neville fired identical 83s to tie for 17th place, while Linda Ong shot an 86 to tie for 29th. Playing as an individual, Tiffany Koyano tied for 12th with an 82.
Cal Poly is the current team leader with a 313 score, while the Highlanders are second at 323 and Seattle University is third with a 324 team score.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday, Mar. 23 with an 18-hole round.
