Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team swept a doubleheader with Utah on Tuesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, winning 5-3 and 7-3. The Highlanders (14-14) have now won five straight games, the longest winning streak in the program's Division I history. The previous high was four games, last set from Mar. 11-14 in 2006. This is also the second-fastest the team has reached 14 wins in DI history.
Senior Marissa Alvidrez started in the circle for UCR in the first game, allowing three runs and scattering six hits in seven innings of work.
The Utes (11-15) scored one run each in the first, third, and fifth innings, but the Highlanders offense went to work in the first inning as they scored four runs on two hits and one error. UCR added an insurance run in the fourth as a Tiana Towns single plated Kameryn Hebenton (pictured) from second.
Alvidrez earned her ninth win of the year, moving into a tie for third place in UCR's Division I history for single-season wins. Ashley Smuda picked up the loss for Utah, allowing four runs in 1.0 innings of work.
Game two started in similar fashion to game one as the Utes scored one run in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders countered with two runs in their respective frame, and added five runs in the next inning. With two outs and bases loaded, Towns was walked to move all runners 60 feet. Brittany Keeney came up to bat next, and drilled a ball over the center field fence for her first-career grand slam, lifting UCR to a 7-1 advantage.
Utah scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get within four, 7-3, but Amy Lwin came in for relief and allowed just two hits in 1.2 innings of work to close out the game.
Lauren Molina (3-3) earned the win for UCR, allowing three runs in 5.2 innings of work. Brittany Parker was saddled with the loss for the Utes, giving up seven runs in 1.2 innings.
For the day, Keeney led the Highlanders with five RBI, Towns added three RBI, two hits, and two runs, and Hebenton led with three hits and three runs.
UC Riverside travels north for the Aggie Stampede hosted by UC Davis on Friday-Sunday, Mar. 26-28.
