Irvine, CA - The Big West Conference released its 2009-10 Women's Basketball All-Conference awards on Monday, naming UC Riverside's Alyssa Morris to the First Team, Rhaya Neabors to the Second Team, and Amber Cox to the Honorable Mention Team.
This is the first award each for Morris and Neabors, while this is Cox's third Honorable Mention accolade as she was named to the team in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
Morris finished sixth in the conference in scoring with 13.4 points per game, fourth in rebounding with 6.5 per game, fifth in field goal percentage (.478), ninth in assists per game (3.2), fourth in free throw percentage (.839), tenth in assist to turnover ratio (0.9), third in defensive rebounds (4.9), and fourth in minutes per game (33.7).
She also led the squad in ten different statistical categories—including points and rebounds—and was the high point scorer in 13 games and the top rebounder in 17 games for the Highlanders.
Neabors ranked 12th in the Big West in scoring, averaging 11.5 points per game—good enough for second on the team. She also finished third in the conference in steals with 2.3 per game, ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.367), and fourth in minutes per game (33.7).
Cox returned to the Highlanders lineup in the 2009-10 season after taking a year off in 2008-09, and came back in fashion as she averaged a career-best 10.0 points per game. She finished in the top-five on the team in 15 different categories, including finishing fourth in points and rebounds.
Cal Poly's Kristina Santiago was named 2009-10 Big West Player of the Year, while Jazmyne White of UC Irvine earned the Freshman of the Year honor, and Coach Sandy Simpson from UC Davis garnered Coach of the Year accolades.
The Big West Women's Basketball Specialty Awards were also announced on Monday, naming UC Davis' Haylee Donaghe as Defensive Player of the Year, Christina Thompson from Pacific as the Sixth Woman, and Ariana Gnekow from UC Santa Barbara as the Best Hustle Player.
The Highlanders head to the Big West Conference Basketball Tournament in Anaheim for a quarterfinal game on Thursday, Mar. 11 at noon against the lowest remaining seed from the first round of competition on Wednesday.
