Box Score - Long Beach State 4, UC Riverside 0
Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside softball team concluded the 2010 season on Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 loss at Long Beach State in Big West Conference play at 49er Softball Complex. The Highlanders finish the year with a 22-32 overall record and 7-14 in league play, while the 49ers end at 26-26, 10-11.
After starting Big West action with a 6-2 record, the team went 1-12 including getting swept in each of the last three conference series.
Nonetheless, UCR tied the school's Division I record for overall wins with 22, last set in 2006, and conference wins with seven, set last season.
Senior Marissa Alvidrez got the starting nod in the circle in her last game as a member of the Highlanders. She pitched three scoreless innings against the 49ers before their bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Consecutive singles to Caitrin DeBaun, Brandy Reyes, and Liz Javier made it 1-0 before an out was recorded. After a pop up, Alvidrez walk Kristen Pocock to load the bases, and Jodi Nakawatase made them pay with a RBI fielder's choice to bring home another run.
The Highlanders did get a force out at second base during that play for two outs in the inning, but Ashley Levine was hit by a pitch at the next at-bat to again load the bases. One batter later, Bree Stephan singled to center field plating two more runs to give Long Beach State a 4-0 advantage.
Looking to get a rally going, UC Riverside had at least one runner on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not bring home a run as the Highlanders were held scoreless for the second time this series.
Brooke Turner (13-10) earned the win for the 49ers, pitching all seven innings and giving up just four hits and no runs for her second straight shutout. Alvidrez (15-16) was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders.
Senior Tiana Towns led UC Riverside by going 2-for-3, while Brittany Keeney and Alexis Pickett recorded a hit each.
