
Highlanders Drop Sixth Straight After Two League Losses To Matadors

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team suffered its sixth straight loss after dropping both games of a Big West Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to Cal State Northridge: 11-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings. The Highlanders fall to 22-28 overall and 7-10 in league play while the Matadors improve to 28-21 and 12-5.
The Highlanders six game losing streak is the longest of the season and the most since they dropped ten consecutive from Apr. 19 - May 4, 2008. The team has also been mercy-ruled in each of the last three games.
UCR allowed 19 runs on 23 hits to the Matadors while scoring just 1 run on nine hits for themselves during Saturday's doubleheader.
Marissa Alvidrez got the starting nod for the Highlanders in game one, but lasted just 1.0 innings as she gave up four earned runs. Alvidrez dropped to 15-13 on the season, having lost the last six straight starts.
Casey Suda came on in relief of Alvidrez in the second inning, but the Matador's bats kept going strong as they scored two runs in the second, three in the third, and two more in the fifth.
Suda ended the game giving up seven runs, six earned, while facing 26 batters.
UC Riverside plated its lone run of the game in the third inning as Coco Villamor scored from third base on an Ariel Shore ground out.
The Highlanders 11-1 loss represents their largest defeat since a 10-0 loss to Notre Dame back in March.
In game two, CSUN continued its scoring prowess by opening the game with three runs in the first inning. They added solo runs in both the second and third innings while scoring two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
The Highlanders had just three base runners all game as they were held scoreless for the first time since a 3-0 loss to #14 Cal on Mar. 27, 2010.
Amy Lwin was saddled with the loss for UCR, pitching 6.0 innings and giving up eight earned runs while walking four.
For the day, Villamor and Alexis Pickett led UC Riverside with two runs apiece while five other players tallied one each.
The Highlanders conclude their three-game series against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, May 9. The home finale of the 2010 schedule is also Senior Day, which begins at 11:50 am at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
