Irvine, CA—A win and we're in!
That's the situation facing the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team as they have a week off to prepare for a Saturday, November 5 home match against UC Davis.
The Highlanders find themselves in the driver's seat with regards to their first-ever postseason berth thanks to Saturday evening's 3-2 road win over No. 9 UC Irvine (Box Score).
The victory helped solidify UCR's hold on third place in conference and moved them to within two points of the top-ranked Anteaters with just one match to play.
The win also avenged UCR's 5-1 home loss to the Anteaters on October 12, and is UC Riverside's third win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Cesar Diaz Pizarro provided the winning goal Saturday with 2:25 remaining in regulation. It was his eighth goal of the season and the program-record eighth game-winning goal of his career.
Cameron Iwasa put the Anteaters on the board first as he took a Christopher Santana pass and forced it past Highlanders keeper Cody Suppé. Jose Diaz tied the match at one apiece in the 39th minute of play when he corralled Leslie Hayden's free kick and scored from five yards out.
Christian Hernandez gave UC Irvine the lead again 12:27 into the second period when he was on the receiving end of a Miguel Ibarra pass and deposited the ball inside the far post.
Just over 11 minutes later, UCR's Humberto Santiago grabbed a rebound in the box and slotted it inside the far post as well to tie the match at two.
Richie Osborne then found Diaz Pizarro with a cross in the box for the game winner as the teams appeared headed for overtime.
Not only do the Highlanders guarantee themselves a spot in the Big West Conference Tournament with a win over the Aggies this Saturday, but they can also still pick up the number one seed should the Anteaters lose their final match of the regular season at Cal Poly on November 1, and UC Davis tie or lose to Cal State Fullerton on November 2.
There are also scenarios in which UC Riverside can advance to the postseason with a tie or a loss in their final match of the regular season.
Kick off this Saturday at the UCR Soccer Stadium is slated for 6 pm PT.
