Las Vegas, NV - The UC Riverside softball team dropped its 2011 season opener 23-4 to the No. 10/11 ranked Washington Huskies in game one of the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic, and fell 13-5 to the host Rebels in game two at Ella Media Stadium on Friday.
Against Washington, a solo home run put the Huskies (2-0) on board in the first, but the Highlanders responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1.
Kayla White, Dionne Anderson, and Brittany Keeney all singled to load the bases, and a wild pitch by Washington's Whitney Jones advanced each of the runners one base. Alexis Pickett then grounded out to first base, plating the second run of the inning and lifting the Highlanders to a 2-1 advantage.
Washington's bats then exploded in the second and third innings as they scored a combined 18 runs to take a 19-2 lead.
UC Riverside got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an Alexis Villamor sac fly to score Taylor Thomas, and a Kameryn Hebenton single through the left side that scored Jessica Vasser.
The Huskies concluded the game with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, setting a new UCR record for most runs scored with 23.
Washington's Bailey Harris picked up the win against the Highlanders.
In game two, UNLV (2-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Highlanders evened things out with a single run in the top of the third.
The Rebels then scored seven runs in the bottom of that inning to go up 8-1. UC Riverside made it a three-run game in the fifth as they scored four runs to cut the score to 8-5.
Hebenton doubled to right field to lead off the inning, and later scored on a error. After a single, White rounded home on Anderson's RBI bunt, and Anderson later scored on a Keeney triple. Thomas' RBI ground out plated Keeney for the last run of the inning, closing the gap to just three runs.
After a scoreless bottom fifth inning for UNLV and top sixth for UCR, the Rebels put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth scoring five more runs to seal the 13-5 victory.
UCR pitcher Amy Lwin was saddled with the loss in both games on Friday, pitching a combined seven innings.
