Box Score - UC Riverside 7, Mississippi State 6
Las Vegas, NV - Alexis Pickett's 2-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning runs for the UC Riverside softball team in a 7-6 win against Mississippi State in the third game of the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic at Ella Media Stadium.
The Highlanders (1-2) were down 6-5 heading into the seventh, but a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Pickett. Her single to center field scored Jordyn McDonald and Dionne Anderson, lifting UCR to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
The first two innings were very much of a pitcher's game as neither team advanced a runner past second base. In the third, however, both teams bats came alive as the Bulldogs scored four runs and UC Riverside responded with two.
Jojo Mendoza led off the inning with a single to left field, and was replaced on the base paths by Alexis Villamor. McDonald's sac bunt advanced Villamor to second, and Kayle White's single scored Villamor for the first run of the inning. Anderson then singled and advanced White to third, where she eventaully scored on a throwing error by MSU's catcher.
In the fifth, Brittany Keeney's 2 RBI double tied the game at four, and Pickett's subsequent single plated Keeney for the go-ahead run.
The Highlanders lead was short lived, however, as Mississippi State scored solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, setting up Pickett's heroics late in the game.
Amy Lwin earned her first win of the season, going 3.2 innings and allowing just two runs. Kylie Vry was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs.
The Highlanders continue play at the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic with a 6:00 pm game against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday evening.
