UCR Women's Hoops Falls In Overtime At Long Beach State, 70-68

Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team had four players in double figures but could not hold on in overtime, falling 70-68 at Long Beach State on Thursday evening.
The Highlanders drop to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while the 49ers improve to 8-19, 6-7.
UCR was up by double digits midway through the second half, but Long Beach rallied back and tied the game at 62 with a minute and a half remaining. Jazzmin Lewis' layup gave the Highlanders a 64-62 lead with 41 seconds left in regulation, but a layup by the 49ers with 24 seconds to go tied the game at 64. Neither team could convert on a last second shot as the game headed into overtime tied at 64.
In OT, Long Beach scored the first three points, but consecutive layups by Rhaya Neabors and Lewis gave UCR a 68-67 lead with 1:25 left. LBSU's Brandi Henton hit a three-pointer with 1:10 remaining to lift the 49ers to a two-point advantage. That score would stand to end the game, as the Highlanders were whistled for an offensive foul with just seconds remaining in overtime.
Neabors led UCR with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Waddell added 13 points, Jazzmin Lewis had a career-high 12 points, and Alyssa Morris added 11.
The teams combined to convert just 2 of 12 shots through the first 4:15 of play in the first half, as the Highlanders took an early 3-2 lead. Tied at nine midway through the period, UCR went 4 of 5 from the field taking a 22-11 lead capped off by three pointers by Alyssa Morris and Rhaya Neabors with just under eight minutes remaining.
The 49ers cut the margin to just three, 24-21, at the 4:25 mark after outscoring UCR 10-2. The Highlanders took a 30-23 lead into the break, outshooting Long Beach 40.7 percent to 32.0 percent in the period.
In the second, Waddell scored 11 of UCR's 19 points in a 19-10 run for the Highlanders as they turned a 32-30 lead into a 51-40 advantage midway through. After going up by 12, 56-44, with 9:32 left in the game, the Highlanders went cold over the next four minutes as the 49ers made it a two-possession game cutting the lead to 56-51.
The Beach then tied the game at 62 with a minute and a half remaining, setting up the tied ball game at 64 and subsequent overtime period.
For the game, the Highlanders shot 45.5 percent from the field, but hit just 18.8 percent of their three pointers. Long Beach shot 42.1 percent of its shots, including 41 percent from beyond the arc.
UC Riverside returns to action to host Cal Poly on Saturday, February 19 at 7:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
